Strategies for Safeguarding your Accounts
What is debit card skimming?
Our
Debit Cards are electronically coded with information that is linked
to our accounts. This allows us to use it for purchases or ABM withdrawals
at various locations at our convenience. Skimming refers to the
process of electronically collecting and storing the information
contained in the magnetic strip of the Debit Card. If the criminals
can also obtain the PIN (Personal Identification Number) attached
to the debit card, they can use this information to make counterfeit
cards to possibly remove money from someone’s accounts.
What
you can do to protect yourself. In
Canada, the information that can be skimmed from a debit card is
of no use to a criminal (or anyone else) without a PIN.This is the
code that you punch in at the ABM or point of purchase at a store.
Many criminals get this PIN by watching as someone punches in their
code and making note of the information. The best way to protect
yourself is to never give anyone your PIN or write it down where
it could be found if your purse or wallet were stolen.
Let
Webster help.
One of the best ways to protect yourself from illegal loss from
your accounts is to monitor them closely. You can view your accounts
on-line with Webster, Niagara Credit Union's INternet Banking service.
View your account statements as often as you wish and if you see
any activity on your accounts that doesn't seem right to you - call
our Contact Centre immediately to report the suspected activity.
If you're not using Webster currently, there's never been a better
time to sign up. Visit one of our branches to obtain your personal
access code (PAC) and then log onto www.niagaracu.com to click on
Webster.

Defensive Strategies for protecting your Card.
- Never
lend your card to anyone including friends and
family and never reveal your PIN.
-
Do not write down your PIN. If thieves found your PIN
it would make their job easier. If you must document it
to remember, disguise it as the end of a fictitious phone
number mixed in your address book with other phone
numbers.
-
When choosing your PIN avoid obvious numbers such as
your birthdate, address, phone number – these are too
easy for a criminal to figure out.
-
Never let your card out of sight during a transaction.
Wherever possible, ask the merchant to let you swipe your
own card.
-
Don’t use your card in areas where you don’t feel
safe and
if you suspect fraudulent behaviour, do not confront the
individual(s) yourself. Contact the police immediately.
-
When entering your PIN, use your hand or body as a
shield over the number pad. This will block someone from
capturing your number visually or with hidden cameras.
-
Keep all of your receipts and review them for accuracy. A
receipt with an incorrect dollar value or one that’s missing
a merchant name or has an incorrect date, may be
evidence of a machine that’s been tampered with.
-
Compare your receipts against your records. Look for
money exiting your account that shouldn’t be withdrawn.
Conversely, if you’ve made a debit purchase and it’s
not
taken from your account, your card may have been
compromised.
-
If your banking card is lost, stolen or retained by a
Banking Machine, call your branch or our Contact Centre
immediately.
-
No one at Niagara Credit Union will ever ask for your
PIN so, if someone claiming to be an employee of NCU
asks for your PIN, contact your NCU branch immediately.
-
If your card has been compromised, immediately contact
your branch for a replacement card. Changing your PIN
will not protect you.
-
Make sure you report any incidents of theft to the police
and to Niagara Credit Union. If your card is lost or
stolen, report it to your branch immediately or call our
Contact Centre at (905) 905-688-7777 (local) or 1-800-
392-8657 (North America) and follow the instructions on
the options offered to you. Niagara Credit Union will
thoroughly investigate your case as quickly as possible.
For
additional information, visit the Interac
website.
